Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our first parents disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position under Him.
The image of God in humanity was marred by sin, but it was not erased. Every person retains worth and dignity as one for whom Christ died. Sin introduced suffering, death, and separation from God, affecting not only individuals but all creation. Yet God did not abandon humanity; He set in motion a plan to restore people to His image.
Through Christ, the image of God is renewed in those who accept salvation. The Holy Spirit works to transform character so that believers reflect the love, holiness, and compassion of Jesus. God's ultimate purpose is to restore humanity to perfect fellowship with Himself and to reflect His glory throughout eternity.
